Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre celebrates Media Literacy Week

In honour of the 11th Annual National Media Literacy Week (October 31 to November 4, 2016), the Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre will be hosting a series of events, tours, workshops and panel discussions. See schedule of events below.

Operating since 1990, Regent Park Youth Media Arts Centre (Regent Park Focus) is a not-for-profit organization located in Regent Park, Toronto. Regent Park Focus serves as a community learning centre for New Media and Radio and Television broadcasting.

Tuesday November 1, 2016 (6 – 9 PM)

Fundraiser in Support of Radio Regent (6 – 9 pm)

Regent Park Focus kicks off Media Literacy Week with a fundraiser of live music and spoken word in support of Radio Regent, an independent internet radio station. Music provided by African Renaissance Blues artist Adam Soloman and Toronto Reggae band The Memberz.

Pay What You Can – suggested donation $10.00.

Location: Paintbox Bistro, 555 Dundas St E. Toronto, in Regent Park.

Wed November 2, 2016 (4 – 7 PM)

Radio Regent presents Idolizing Justin Bieber & Kim Kardashian (4 pm – 5:30 pm)

Join youth in a radio discussion exploring celebrity culture. What does our fascination with the stars reveal about our ideals concerning who we want to be, what constitutes success, and what it might mean to live the good life? Meet with staff and learn how you can produce a radio show on Radio Regent. Individuals, community groups and educators welcome.

Tour Regent Park Television Studios (4 – 5:30 pm)

Tour the studios and learn how a community public access television station operates. Meet with staff, pitch your ideas and learn how you can produce a TV series on Regent Park TV.  Join us for a taping of television shows for later broadcast.  Individuals, community groups and educators welcome.

Artistic Copyright Workshop: “Can I use this?” (4:30 – 5:30 pm)

Join us for a workshop, co-facilitated by The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), around music and digital copyright issues.

Heritage Public Consultation: On Canadian Content in a Digital World (5:30 pm – 7:00 pm )

The new Canadian Heritage Minister, Hon. Mélanie Joly, is asking Canadians to weigh in on Canadian content in the digital era. In this session, co-facilitated by Canadian Association of Television Stations and Users (CACTUS), we invite you to share your thoughts on why public access tv, radio, and new media matters. Results will be remitted to the Heritage Minister.

Thursday November 3, 2016 (4 – 7 pm)

DJ Workshop (4 – 6 pm)

Radio Regent DJ Adrian Hope of Crush Grooves radio show will introduce you to the equipment and basic techniques of DJ-ing. Pre-registration required.

Game Programming Workshop (4 – 5:30 pm)

Learn about the Regent Park Focus Game Design Program. Introduction to Scratch Gaming Software.

Panel Discussion: “What is the role of media education and literacy in the age of the selfie?” (5:30  7:00 pm)

Join educators & participants from MediaSmarts, MakerKids, CampTech, Girls Crack the Code, George Brown College and Regent Park Focus as they tackle the question of the role of media education today.

Friday November 4, 2016 (4 – 7 pm)

Regent Park TV Screening (4:30  5:30 pm)

Join us in a screening of work produced by youth in the 2016 Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre program.

Location: 38 Regent Street -Lower Level

Annual General Membership Meeting & Volunteer Awards Presentation (5:30  6:30 pm)

Join members of the Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre in their annual general membership meeting and take part in recognizing the work of volunteers and supporters. Refreshments provided.
