September 17, 2008 - Ottawa, ON - Responsible TV: Gender, Child Development and Violence

A representative from Media Awareness Network is speaking as part of a panel discussion at the Television Animation Conference. The panel deals with responsible television animation for children, exploring topics in child development, gender representation and violence. The goal of this panel is to better the landscape of media for children now and for future generations.

During the launch receive the TRUE YOUth media toolkit and learn how to use newspaper, TV, radio, and social media to publicize your organization and the potential of youth to contribute to our community. Guest speakers include Global TV's news anchor Gord Gillies and media relations specialist Daryl Zerr of Zerr Communications Inc.

Join the Social Imaging Action Group and guest speaker Aisling Slattery from City TV's Breakfast Television for a free interactive workshop on how to get your voice heard. Learn how to use newspaper, TV, radio and social media to spread the word about what's going on in your world. This event is geared towards youth 16-24 years old.

October 3, 2008 - Montréal, QC - From the Oka Crisis to Reasonable Accommodation: Ethnic Reports and Social Responsibility of the Media

A day of reflection organized by the Discriminations et insertion section of the Centre d'études ethniques des universités montréalaises (CEETUM). This event brings together journalists, academics, and member organizations including the Press Council and Media Awareness Network to discuss ethnic reports and the social responsibility of the media.

October 14, 2008 - Student Vote Federal

Student Vote is coordinating a national parallel election for Canada's 40th general election. The initiative was designed for students to discuss and deliberate the current issues, parties and candidates in class and with family and friends. It culminates in an authentic voting experience where students vote on the real candidates. The project is open to all elementary, junior and senior high schools and there is no cost to participate.

October 24, 2008, 7:00-9:00 PM - NFB Theatre, Montreal, QC- We made this! : Media for a New Generation

National Film Board's (NFB) CitizenShift is hosting a showing of four creative media projects featuring youth voices as part of CBC Montréal's Montreal Matters 2008 initiative. This exciting event will bring facilitators and participants of youth-media workshops together to share and compare their works and experiences. The event is open to the general public and is free of charge.

October 25-28, 2008 – Cinerobotheque, Montreal, QC – Get Animated!

To celebrate World Animation Day, the National Film Board's Cinerobotheque will present a special program focusing on animation including screenings of animated films for youth and family animation workshops that explore some of the techniques for which the NFB is famous.

October 27, 2008 - March 25, 2009 – Nationally – Show What you Know

The CHF's is once again launching their Media Literacy Contest. This contest focuses on the creation of a multimedia project to allow students to think critically and create messages in a variety of forms. The projects developed by students will focus around the current World Food Crisis for Grades 10-12 and the Root Causes of Poverty for Grades 1-9.

October 28, 2008, 5:30-7:30 PM - -McGill- University, Montreal, QC - Shoot First, Answer Questions Later: Youth as Media Producers

An interactive session that brings together academics, community activists, media specialists and young media producers to explore how youth-made and youth-led media can change our perceptions of youth culture and life in a rapidly changing world. Panellists will explore a range of youth-made and youth-led media productions, including older (film, video and radio) and newer (remix and mash-up) forms.

October 29-November 2, 2008 – Mediatheque, Toronto, ON – Get Animated!

To celebrate World Animation Day, the National Film Board's Mediatheque is presenting a program of great new works from the NFB's Oscar-winning animation studios. Youth can also celebrate all things animated by attending one of the animation workshops featuring a variety of tricks and techniques. Admission is free for all events.

October 31-November 7, 2008 – Ontario – TVO Firewall Contest and TVO Online Poll

TVOKids is hosting a special week-long contest related to its online game Firewall! This educational game teaches parents and children important tips on how to stay safe online. Participants can watch TVOKids on November 7 to see if they have won. Parents can participate too by completing TVOParents online poll of children's internet behaviour.

November 2, 2008, 12:30 PM - Cineplex Odeon Sheppard Grande, Toronto, ON - Sprockets Globetrotter Series presents Bibi Blocksberg

This German film is part of the Sprockets Globetrotter Series, a monthly children's screening programme. It is a great way for parents and children to spend quality time together experiencing something that they can all enjoy. For this series, Sprockets scours the globe for intelligent films that speak to children's issues, while maintaining a strong element of fun and excitement.

November 3-7, 2008 - Collège international Marie de France, Montréal, QC - Le monde virtuel? Pensez-y!

In conjunction with Enfant Retour Québec, the parent association at the college and community outreach police officer Lina Borremans, Collège international Marie de France is organising a series of workshops and conferences for parents and children to encourage young people to become thoughtful, informed and empowered when they are online.

Nov. 3-7, 2008 - Vancouver, BC - Lipstick + Gasoline: Blowing Up Gender in the Media

Pacific Cinémathèque is presenting a series of events during National Media Education Week that will scrutinize and subvert images and stereotypes of gender as projected on the screens in our lives: television, cinemas, computers and cell phones. The week's events target youth and educators as well as the general public, and feature guest speakers, workshops, activities, art exhibitions, and film screenings. NMEW events in Vancouver are brought to you by a partnership that includes Pacific Cinémathèque, the BC Association for Media Education, Simon Fraser University School of Communication, Vancouver Art Gallery, NFB Pacific and Yukon Centre, Women in View 2010, REEL CANADA, BC Teachers Federation, and BC Public Librarians Association.

November 3-7 – Media Education and the Five Senses

Media Education Project is creating a series of podcasts that prompt us to consider the various relationships between media and the senses and the role of the senses in critical, creative thought and ethical action. A different sense will be covered in the podcast each day starting with the sense of sight.

November 3, 2008 – Nationally – Cybercitizen challenge

Girl Guides of Canada are launching the Cybercitizen challenge to give girls and young women in Guiding the critical thinking skills they need to use digital technologies safely and wisely. Topics covered in this challenge include privacy, safety, ethical use, online marketing and authentication of information. This challenge has been designed in cooperation with Media Awareness Network.

November 3, 2008 – Montreal, QC – Award-winning Investigative Journalist and Bestselling author Ian Halperin

The English Montreal School Board has invited award-winning investigative journalist and New York Times bestselling author Ian Halperin to speak to students at LaurenHill Academy at 9:55 AM. At 11:35 AM he will speak to students at Gardenview elementary school.

November 3, 2008 - Roxborough School, Hamilton, ON - Director's Cut Claymation Workshop

Students start by developing their own characters and scenes. They then use stop-motion technology and cutting edge video cameras, laptop computers, expert instruction and their imagination to bring to life their very own Hollywood blockbuster stop-motion film. They also get to add sound effects, voiceovers, special effects, transitions and titles to make their film a shoe in for an Academy Award.

November 4, 2008, 5:30-7:30 PM – Toronto, ON – The Impact of Social Media on Politics

The Association for Media Literacy is hosting a discussion session exploring social media, politics, and media literacy strategies with guest speaker Jesse Hirsh. Mr. Hirsh is a broadcaster, researcher and internet evangelist in Toronto. He frequently appears on CBC Radio and has a weekly spot on CBC Newsworld. This event will also be available as a webcast.

The Alberta Association for Media Awareness is holding a fun evening for adults and young people to learn about branding. The session will include interactive games and information to help you become aware of how brands influence our purchasing decisions.

November 4, 2008 - Flemington Park Public School, Toronto, ON - Director's Cut Comic Book Workshop

With the help of experts in the field of comic books, students work together using digital cameras, laptop computers, and their own imagination to turn their ideas into comic books. They take and edit digital pictures, and then create a one of a kind, published comic book that may even make Stan Lee a little nervous.

November 4, 2008, 12:30-3:00 PM – North Toronto Collegiate Institute, Toronto, ON – Think Critically, Act Ethically: Stay safe online

PREVNet, YOUCAN, and the Toronto District School Board are hosting a workshop and townhall meeting about cyber bullying for students in Grades 7-12. Students can learn techniques and tips to identify and prevent cyber bullying; find out about resources to help them if they are bullied online; and share opinions and ideas so that everyone can be part of the solutions.

Historica is joining with Media Awareness Network and the Canadian Teachers' Federation to host a media event in recognition of National Media Education Week. Students attending Historica's Encounters with Canada forum will participate in activities to promote ethical and pro-social online behaviours and encourage a more positive image of young people's Internet use in the mainstream media.

Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 6:00-8:00 PM - NFB Mediatheque, Toronto ON - Making Sense of Sound: Integrating Sound into Media Education

Take a behind-the-scenes look at various aspects of sound production. From podcasting to sound design to in-class production, we invite you to meet a panel of innovative practitioners as they explain their novel approaches to creating meaning through sound. Panellists will discuss the use of sound to evoke emotions and enhance imagery in film and video, the creative aspects of live sound effects such as the Foley technique, creating podcasts in the classroom, and musical composition. There will be a specific emphasis on how sound production can be incorporated into the Ontario media literacy curriculum. This inspiring multimedia event is presented by the National Film Board Mediatheque, CITIZENShift, Media Education Project and Media Awareness Network.

Media education students from Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard, Quebec have been invited to Concordia University where former Montréal Peter M. Lenkov will be the guest speaker. Lenkov is the executive producer of CSI: New York. He previously held the same position with the show 24.

November 7, 9:00 AM-3:00 PM - Segal Centre for Performing Arts at the Saidye, Montreal, QC - Media Literacy in the Classroom: A Workshop for Educators

The Segal Centre is hosting a hands-on, interactive workshop dedicated to providing teachers with the tools and knowledge to address media literacy in their classrooms. This one-day workshop will address how to incorporate the Quebec reform's competencies for media literacy in the curriculum and introduce creative and expressive resources for teaching media. The course fees are $60 + tax.

November 13, 2008 - St. John's, NL - Premiere of Documentary Celebrating Holy Heart

Premiere screening of a documentary celebrating the history of -Holy- -Heart- High School in St. John's, Newfoundland. The film was produced by fifteen Holy Heart students with support from the Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Cooperative (NIFCO). The project was created by Jeanne O'Brien, an English and Film Studies teacher at Holy Heart as a way to build upon a growing student interest in filmmaking and as a means to document the rich cultural legacy of the school.

November 20, 2008 – Quebec City, QC – Children’s lifestyles and the advertisements that targets them: Is there a correlation and how should we act?

As part of Quebec’s Journées annuelles de la santé publique, a representative from Media Awareness Network will be participating in a panel discussion about youth-targeted advertising, and in particular, advertising that could lead to behaviour that could be harmful to their health and well-being.

November 20, 2008, 7:00 PM – Toronto, ON – Holes in the Ad Bucket: Water, Advertising, and the World We Want

Schools and cities are starting to take a second look at our daily consumption of bottled water and all its related impacts.  Media education is an effective tool for reading and re-writing the issues of commodification, clean water scarcities, human and ecosystem health, water privatization, and modern branding.  This workshop, hosted by GlobalAware, will feature water advertisements, case studies, current facts, and activities for questioning the tasteful and textual qualities of our water consumption.

This conference brings together Canadian youth production creators and professionals to address programming trends and provide insights into young people's interests and needs. Conference activities include thematic workshops, talks, screenings, discussions and meetings with prestigious guests from home and abroad.

November 25, 2008 – Vancouver, BC – REEL CANADA Film Festival

REEL CANADA is hosting school festivals in three Vancouver high schools – Templeton, Lord Byng and Vancouver Technical Secondary. Students will program and screen six Canadian films over the course of the day, and participate in workshops and post-screening discussions with special guests.  This project is presented with the support of local partners such as BC Film, DGC-BC and Corus Entertainment.

November 25, 2008 - Ottawa, ON - News and the Netizen Symposium

Public Policy Forum is organizing a one-day symposium that will explore the links between the evolving state of news media, technological innovations, and civic engagement among youth. Panels and discussions will focus on citizenship in the internet age, the shift from mass media to personal media, and the generational differences in democratic participation.

December 12, 2008 - Ottawa, ON - Deadline for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's myprivacy & me Video PSA Contest (National)

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is inviting young people between the ages of 12 and 18 to create their own public service announcement (PSA) on the issue of privacy. Privacy is a growing concern, particularly among young people. The OPC is encouraging young people to create their own video PSA which will inform other youth about current privacy issues and the importance of protecting one's personal information. The ultimate goal of their PSA should be to encourage other young people to critically think about how their personal information is collected and used everyday, and how their privacy can be compromised.
