Beyond Images: A self-esteem and body-image curriculum

A curriculum to teach students to read media with greater understanding of the intent of message makers and provide them with an opportunity to create their own media messages. Instead of being passive consumers, students become active producers of media messaging relating to their personal views of self-esteem and body-image. The curriculum was created by the National Eating Disorder Information Centre with the generous support of the Dove Self Esteem Fund and brought to life by The Director's Cut.

Stop Frame

CinéRobothèque is hosting Stop Frame, a workshop about critical thinking. Participants watch a film and then analyze the issues raised, under the guidance of a facilitator. The idea behind the workshop is to use the work of the documentary filmmaker as a springboard for dialogue; to analyze documentary methods of presentation and persuasion; to encourage active citizenship; and to create a supportive environment for public dialogue on hot topics.

CHF is once again launching their Media Literacy Contest. This contest focuses on the creation of a multimedia project to allow students to think critically and create messages in a variety of forms. The projects developed by students will focus around any issues that impact the rural poor in developing countries. The contest is open to all grades.

Emerge: Women rising

Vancouver Status of Women and Point Youth Media present an 8-week media arts training project that offers women facing systemic barriers the opportunity to share their realities. Participants receive technical media training facilitated by Point Youth Media to introduce them to photography as a means of individual expression. They will receive cameras, take and process their own photos, and together select those they would like to showcase at a community exhibit.

Media Literacy and Health Literacy… Connecting the dots

A representative from Concerned Children’s Advertisers is presenting at Inspiration and Innovation in Teaching and Teacher Education, the Edge 2009 conference. The presentation will look at the connections that exist between children’s health, both physically and emotionally, and how media plays a role in shaping their thoughts and actions.

Youth Film International Film Screening and Gala

Youth Film International is hosting a gala and film screening of documentaries created by students participating in their documentary-creation workshop. The program was created to instil a sense of responsibility in students in what they present to their world, and what they contribute to the airwaves on a global level.

The Pan Canadian panel includes Kathy Cassidy, Grade 1 Teacher, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Dr. Alec Couros, Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Regina, Saskatchewan; Ben Hazzard, Consultant: Assessment & Evaluation K-12, Lambton Kent District School Board, Ontario; and Jacques Cool, New Brunswick Ministry of Education. News Gathering in the Digital Age

Media Awareness Network, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and Encounters with Canada, a program of the Historica-Dominion Institute, are hosting a media panel on the impact of digital media on journalism and news gathering in the 21st century. Panellists include Andrew Cohen, award-winning journalist, best-selling author and President of the Historica-Dominion Institute; Scott Rubin, head of policy communications at YouTube; Roger Dubois, video-journalist with CBC.ca; and Althia Raj, National Bureau reporter for Sun Media. The event will be moderated by Daniel Bouchard, news anchor for Radio-Canada and Professor of Communication at University of Ottawa. MNet’s media education specialists will be tweeting from the event.

Experimental Films and Educational Documentaries: Fresh perspectives on a neglected medium

Media Education Working Group, Media Education Foundation, Toronto Film Seminar, National Film Board of Canada – Mediatheque, Association for Media Literacy, Canadian Film Makers Distribution Centre and Media Education Project are hosting an evening of discussion and debate on a cross section of short films. The event will include excerpts from Media Education Foundation films Tough Guise and Killing Us Softly 3, screenings of Runaway, Neighbours, and Very Nice, Very Nice from the National Film Board, and of experimental films Dangling Participle and New Improved Institutional Quality, selected by Michael Zryd, associate professor of Film at York University. Admission is free.

Girls, Media and Body Image

Girls Action Foundation is holding Media Literacy Week activities at an elementary school and a high school in the Montreal area. The activities aim to raise awareness amongst girls about the influence media have on their perception of self and to help them develop self awareness and self confidence.

Reimaging Citizenship: A digital literacies symposium for youth media producers

Join this week-long series of workshops designed for youth video producers and led by writers, educators and activists. The symposium will consider how ideas of citizenship and social justice can be explored throughout the digital media production process.

Time to Remember - Time to Envision

Several organizations from South Shore are collaborating to offer students a multimedia program including a screening of locally produced video vignettes of WWII veterans and a Q&A session with veterans from the community about the impact of war on our lives. Students are then asked to reflect on the experience in class and share their interpretations on a community Web site. All of the videos and related content will be available in a collection on the local SouthshoreNow Web site and the DesBrisay Museum will include the videos in their military history section.

Panel Discussion Featuring Montreal Media Personalities

The English Montreal School Board is hosting a discussion panel moderated by Steve Kowch, a graduate of Rosemount High School and the news and program director at CJAD Radio. The panel will include noted Montreal media personalities including Chantal Desjardins, co-host of The Rush, Virgin Radio 96 FM’s drive home show and Mitch Melnick, host of the talk show Team990.

Pacific Cinémathèque, BC Association for Media Education and the Vancouver Art Gallery are hosting media production and critical thinking workshops for Grade 12 social justice students and teachers. REEL CANADA Film Festivals

REEL CANADA raises awareness among the high school population of the incredible achievements of Canadian filmmakers past and present, and ultimately enhances young people's appreciation of their national culture. In total, over 4,500 students from at least 16 schools across Canada will be participating in our fall season, spread out over six film festival events in November and early December. REEL CANADA is an initiative of members of the Canadian film and television industry.

The Alliance for Children and Television will host the 2009 Children, Youth & Media Conference. myprivacy & me Video PSA Contest Deadline

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is inviting young people between the ages of 12 and 18 to create their own public service announcement (PSA) on the issue of privacy. Privacy is a growing concern, particularly among young people. The OPC is encouraging young people to create their own video PSA which will inform other youth about current privacy issues and the importance of protecting one's personal information. The ultimate goal of their PSA should be to encourage other young people to critically think about how their personal information is collected and used everyday, and how their privacy can be compromised.
