Sponsorship…
Media Awareness Network (MNet) and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation are proud to announce that YouTube is a Gold Sponsor for Media Literacy Week 2009. YouTube’s involvement and generous support speaks to the importance of this year’s theme – Media Literacy in the Digital Age – and the many different literacy skills needed by young people as they work, play, create and communicate through digital media.

Featured events
This year a wide range of events are taking place across the country to mark the week, including an intergenerational dialogue between students and veterans in the community of South Shore, Nova Scotia and professional development workshops for teachers in the English Montreal School Board in Montreal, Quebec.
Time to Remember - Time to Envision
From November 2-6, several organizations from South Shore are collaborating to offer students a multimedia program including a screening of locally produced video vignettes of WWII veterans and a Q&A session with veterans from the community about the impact of war on our lives. Students will then be asked to reflect on the experience in class and share their interpretations on a community Web site.

Featured educators and youth
Educators and youth from across the country are creating innovative media literacy projects every day. One of these educators is Frances MacKinnon, Producer for the Discovery Channel in Toronto, Ontario.

Frances is the founder of Youth Films International (YFI), a volunteer-run series of documentary workshops that provides students with real life documentary-making experience from concept to screening. The free YFI workshops foster a fun, no-experience-required atmosphere, where students get hands-on help from top industry professionals.
