Media education in action...
Featured events
Events to celebrate the week are taking place in schools and communities across Canada. Here are how the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and Sprockets (Toronto International Film Festival For Children) will be marking National Media Education Week 2008:
December 12, 2008 Deadline for myprivacy & me Video PSA Contest
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is inviting young people, between the ages of 12 and 18, to create their own public service announcement (PSA) on the issue of privacy. Privacy is a growing concern, particularly among youth. The OPC is encouraging young people to create their own video PSA to inform their peers about current privacy issues and the importance of protecting one's personal information. The ultimate goal of the contest is to encourage youth to critically think about how their personal information is collected and used everyday, and how their privacy can be compromised. MNet is supporting this contest with new privacy education resources for the classroom (see Featured resource).

November 2, 2008, 12:30 PM Sprockets Globetrotter Series presents Bibi Blocksberg
Bibi Blocksberg is a German film that is part of the Sprockets (Toronto International Film Festival For Children) Globetrotter Series; a monthly children's screening programme at the Cineplex Odeon Sheppard Grande in Toronto, Ontario. For this series, Sprockets scours the globe for intelligent films that speak to children's issues, while maintaining a strong element of fun and excitement. This is a great way for parents and children to spend quality time together experiencing something that they can all enjoy.

Featured educators and youth
This section spotlights innovative educators and youth across the country who are making media education happen. This week’s featured educator is Jeanne O’Brien, of Holy Heart High School in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Jeanne O’Brien is an English and Film Studies teacher who worked with a group of fifteen students to produce a documentary about the history of their school in honour of its 50th anniversary. Ms. O’Brien created the project as a way to build upon a growing student interest in filmmaking and as a means to document Holy Heart’s rich cultural legacy.

Ideas to get you started
You don’t need a grand event to get involved in National Media Education Week. Students, parents and teachers can participate in meaningful small-scale activities in their classrooms, homes or community centres. Need a few ideas to get you started?
