Media education in action...

Featured event

Events to celebrate the week are taking place in schools and communities across Canada. This is how Director's Cut will be marking National Media Education Week 2008:

Director's Cut Claymation and Comic Book Workshops

Director's Cut, a company that hosts technology, filmmaking and animation workshops for youth, will be hosting workshops for students and teachers at Roxborough School in Hamilton, Ontario and at Flemington Park Public School in Toronto.

  • November 3, 2008 - Claymation Workshop
At this workshop, students at Roxborough School will be developing their own claymation characters and scenes. Using stop-motion technology and cutting edge video cameras, laptop computers, expert instruction - and their imaginations - students will bring to life their very own Hollywood blockbuster stop-motion film. They will also get to add sound effects, voiceovers, special effects, transitions and titles to make their film a shoe-in for an Academy Award.

  • November 4, 2008 - Comic Book Workshop
With the help of experts in the field of comic books, students at Flemington Park Public School will work together to turn their ideas into comic books. Using digital cameras and laptop computers, students will take and edit digital pictures to create and publish their own, one-of-a-kind comic books.

Ideas to get you started

You don't need a grand event to get involved in National Media Education Week. Students, parents and teachers can participate in meaningful small-scale activities in their classrooms, homes or community centers. Need a few ideas to get you started?

  • Have young people address the pressures to look perfect by deconstructing magazine covers aimed at a youth audience. Once they have analysed existing magazine covers, challenge them to create a cover for their own magazine that they would like to read.
  • Have your children play an educational game that teaches them how to think critically about the Internet. There are a number of free educational games offered on the Media Awareness and TVO Web sites.

Featured educators and youth

AthenaThis section spotlights innovative educators and youth across the country who are making media education happen. This week's featured youth are Naomi Hyba, Michelle Olding and Hannah Jackson, from Canterbury High School in Ottawa, Ontario.

These three young women spearheaded a media project that resulted in the creation of Athena, a magazine for girls by girls to serve as an alternative to today's mainstream magazine.
